The 17-year-old William Cowper Year 11 student, who plays first grade for Tudor Wests in the Northern Hockey Premier League, has been selected in the NSW Bushrangers for what is a three-week tour.
“We spend the first week training at the university in Pretoria,” Cameron said.
“The second week we tour around and play a number of local high schools.
“The third week we have the Cape Town Under 18 Schools Invitational Tournament,” he said.
“They have teams from all over for that.
“There are English and Dutch teams so should be fairly competitive and it should have a real mixture of different styles.
“It will be interesting to see how they play hockey.”
He believes his NSW Bushrangers will be more than competitive although it’s not his first time touring overseas.
“We went to New Zealand last year.
“That was pretty good.
“It was different too. They play a much different style of hockey to us and we did play mainly older and open sides.
“We were a bunch of 16-year-olds but played well.
“It was good fun.”
He’s hoping the South African tour will also be “a lot of fun”.
He will miss a few games with his Tudor Wests side too which is running second in the Northern Hockey Premier League.
“We’ve got a good enough side to win it for sure.
“We’ve got a good mixture with some good young guys like Andrew Finch and some experience from Sam Lobsey and Andrew McMahon.”
There were no men’s and women’s senior games in Tamworth on the weekend because of the York Cup/Small Shield Under 11 Hockey Tournament but the NHPL headed to Armidale yesterday where Tudor Wests beat Wolf Pack 7-2, South United had a 6-2 win over Kiwi Diggers and Services Workies and Armidale City played out a 2-all draw.
