The first West Tamworth rugby league football club was formed in 1912 and has had some changes over the years, apparently turning into the West Railway club at one stage then the West Tamworth Robins and the addition of the Scully Park clubhouse to its present-day West Lions Rugby League Football Club and the Wests Entertainment Group.
While the centenary was last year and that was lost in a season where the Lions won a fourth straight Group 4 first grade premiership, former player Kevin Robinson is determined to make sure the centenary is celebrated and the past history of a great football club honoured.
“I don’t care if it was West Railway, Robins or now the Lions, it’s the same club and we need to celebrate that 100 years,” Robinson said.
“They are one of the most famous and successful clubs in country football.”
West might have won just one Clayton Cup (symbol of Country Rugby League supremacy) but it has produced some wonderful players and had some outstanding coaches.
Robinson captained West to a first grade premiership in 1974 and hopes to skipper a team of club supporters to a reunion success.
He has contacted a number of former players, officials and supporters to enlist them to a cause to organise and run a reunion weekend on October 18/19/20.
That centenary crew includes people such as former player and coach Ken Thompson, a man who played for NSW in the days of the Rapers and Gasniers.
Ron Surtees, Peter Blom, Lesley Graham and another former player and coach, The Pub Group’s Craig Power, are all on board.
However Robinson hopes to attract more former players, supporters and officials to join the reunion group.
The reunion committee is having another meeting at the Family Hotel next Tuesday night (7pm start).
Robinson invites any interested person along to join his reunion committee and plan for a big weekend.
He also welcomes anyone with memorabilia to contact him or one of his committee so arrangements can be made to showcase all the old football photos, blazers, jumpers, pins, medallions etc.
Robinson can be contacted on 0408 068998.
