Serendipity has donated the money to the Tamworth screening and assessment unit operated by BreastScreen NSW Hunter New England Health, which operates many services, including the new North West Cancer Centre, where Serendipity’s generous work has gone before.
Shayne McDonald of BreastScreen Tamworth said the latest donation would be put towards refurbishing the screen and assessment unit, including buying new lounges and tables and recovering the waiting room chairs.
BreastScreen’s purpose-built premises officially opened in 1995 and the unit has remained unchanged since then.
“This money will allow us to make enhancements that will see the unit become a brighter, fresher place for our clients,” Mrs McDonald said.
Serendipity president Ruth Campbell said one of the objectives of the committee was to promote breast health awareness and mammography screening, so they had always been very supportive of BreastScreen.
“This donation is just another way we ensure locally raised money is being used for local people,” Ms Campbell said.
Committee member Robyn Barton initiated the call for the unit fundraiser, and that, said Mrs McDonald, was “really serendipitous”.
“We were looking at all the things that needed to be updated and then Robyn called saying the Serendipity Committee wanted to make a donation – it was perfect,” she said.
Serendipity’s aim was to raise local money so the cancer journey for local people couldbe improved, and the unit had always been on the receiving end of Serendipity’s generosity, she said.
Serendipity will also contribute an additional $5000 to go towards new gowns for the North West Cancer Cancer in coming weeks.
Each year the Serendipity Committee coordinates a number of fundraising events for local people with cancer.
One of those events is the annual Red Bucket Day, held on the Friday night and Saturday before Mother’s Day and this year is no exception.
“It is one of our most successful events, contributing to over $11,000 in raised funds in the last two years,” Ms Campbell said.
