Thunderbolt juniors sides sit on top of five of the girls’ and boys’ Northern Junior League tables after the round of matches.
Thunderbolt Under 14, 16 and 18 men and the Thunderbolt Blue Under 14 and Under 16 girls are all unbeaten and top of their NJL competitions while the Under 12 girls are also unbeaten after winning all three of their games on the weekend, but sitting in third behind Maitland Mustangs and Newcastle Hunters, who have played five matches apiece so far.
Quirindi and Armidale Lions also had teams taking part last weekend with Quirindi playing in the 13-team Under 18 men and Under 12 girls.
The Quirindi girls won one from three as did their men.
The Armidale Lions also had two teams contesting the NJL round, its U18 men winning one from three and its Under 14 men winning three of its four games.
The Lions lost just once, a close 53-47 loss to the Tamworth Thunderbolts.
The Thunderbolt Under 14 men, won all four games to lead its NJL.
“They are a good side,” said Tamworth Thunderbolt junior coaching director Greg O’Toole at Sunday’s NJL central venue competition.
“Well coached by Ian Watt and playing well. Riley Murphy has been outstanding. He’s leading them well.”
Toby Whale and Tyson Rennie also featured prominently for the Thunderbolt 14 boys.
Greg O’Toole also coaches the Thunderbolt Under 14 Blue girls.
They won all four of their games and are impressing O’Toole with their all-round abilities.
“They are playing well too. They are understanding the game, when to run and when not. They are a good running team and playing smart for such a young group. We have five bottom agers in the 10.”
Those five were well coached by Pete McDonald last year to make the final of the State Championship in their 12 age group.”
