After sifting through a large number of hopefuls, junior cricket officials came up with six teams to contest Hunter Valley and North West Under 12, 14 and 16 competitions again next season.
“But we don’t have coaches as yet,” Tamworth Juniors Cricket Association president Chris Paterson said.
He was talking at the Tamworth District Cricket Association annual presentation night at the new Ian “Butch” Southwell Cricket House after he had picked up the TDCA’s second grade batting aggregate award.
Paterson had topped the TDCA’s second grade batting aggregate with 429 runs.
Last month, his son, Jye, was named the Tamworth Junior cricketer of the Year for the second year running. He will be a part of the Tamworth Under 14 Blues when they contest the Hunter Valley Junior competition next season.
Finding a coach for that side and the other five is now uppermost in Paterson’s mind.
“We do need coaches,” Paterson said. “Hopefully we’ll get applications this month. They’ll close on May 10. We have another meeting in the middle of May and will decide them then.
“We’ve just had a great season too. All the sides played well and we do have some great young juniors coming through.
“You only have to look at tonight. With the six young players awarded junior encouragement awards and kids like Matty Bryant and Lochlan Cooke.”
Bryant won the fourth grade batting average, 294 runs at 49 and was also named man of the grand final, scoring runs and taking wickets in the Old Boys grand final success. He will play in next season’s Tamworth Under 15 Gold side.
Cooke, an up and coming leg spinner from City United, was one of the six young players afforded a Junior Encouragement Award by the TDCA
He also won the John Muller Best Bowling Award after a brilliant effort against North Tamworth back on November 24 last year.
Cooke, the son of former Tamworth A Grade Golf Champion Neil Cooke, took 7-22 from his 9.4 overs of leg spin against the Redbacks.
He has been named in the Tamworth Under 16 Blues along with Bill Buster, who won the TDCA’s second grade bowling average. Buster took 15 wickets at 8.93 for his Redbacks second grade side.
