Last Sunday the Tamworth siblings both won Longyard A Grade Club Championships.
They become the first siblings to have won club championships in the same year at either the Tamworth or Longyard clubs since Simon Furneaux and his sister Phoebe won Longyard Club championships in 1996.
Gail Salter (nee Mathews) and her two brothers, Steve and Paul Mathews, all won Tamworth A Grade club championships but Steve won his title in 1977 while Paul won three in 1971, 74 and 76.
Gail won the first of her 15 TGC ladies championships in 1980 and her last, as Gail Salter, in 2005.
On Sunday Angie carded a final-round 79 to go with earlier rounds of 86,83,86 for a 72-hole total of 334 and a five-shot win from Mary-Anne Macklinshaw.
Ben, 35, shot rounds of 72,70, 71,71 to finish with a 72-hole total of 284 and a nine-shot win over Nathan Mann and John Trevaskis.
He finished four under par and, while he took a six-shot lead into the final round, his sister had to come from behind.
“I trailed by four shots going into the last round,” Angie, who had won a title previously in 2008, said.
She now plays off eight.
“I’ve got an 18-month old at home and gave up for a couple of years,” she said.
“I’ve just been getting back into it over the last year.”
She also works part-time in administration for The Pub Group but also lives beside the Longyard course as her partner is course superintendent Ben Norton-Smith.
Ben Lockwood won his third Longyard title on Sunday to go with his two Tamworth Golf Club A Grade Championships.
“I struggled early in the third round – was three over after nine,’ Lockwood said yesterday. “But then I had about four birdies in five holes to turn it around and make it a decent round.
“I did struggle at the start of all three early rounds though but finished off strongly.
“The last round I played conservatively and a bit smarter.”
