Army disposes of grenade near Armidale

AN UNEXPLODED hand grenade triggered an emergency response to a property near Armidale and is being examined by bomb experts.

Geologists found the device on Saturday afternoon while examining old mine shafts at a property on McCannas Rd at Tillbuster, 13km north of the city.

Armidale police attended the scene and immediately cordoned off and secured the area.

Officers from the Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit in Sydney were on-site to examine the grenade and deemed it posed no immediate risk to public safety.

Army bomb-disposal officers collected the grenade from the site yesterday afternoon.

Senior police yesterday said their investigation into how the grenade got into the mine shaft was continuing, however there weren’t any suspicious circumstances involved.
