Locals score squad spots

TAMWORTH players have figured prominently in state hockey squads released yesterday.

The NSW women's country squad for the upcoming National Championships at Bendigo, and the men's and women's U21 and U18s squads for 2013 were all named and feature a strong sprinkling of local talent.

A couple of players are even doubling up with Sam Liles being named in both the 18s and 21s squads and Ashley Ninness the U21s squad and country women's teams.

It will be her first time away with the Country side when they compete at next month's Australian Country Championships but she'll have plenty of familiar company with Ashley Allen, Katie Hartley, Kimmy Hill and Shelley Stevenson also making the side.

They were all part of the Tamworth side that finished seventh ? on countback ? at last weekends State Championships.

The Australian titles will be held from July 29-August 4.

Ninness has, along with Emma Clifton and Lauren Chew, Armidale's Georgina Morgan and Waratahs player Keely Hunter (Bathurst), also been selected in the 2013 women's U21s squad.

They will attend a series of trial sessions next year as will the U21s men squad, which includes Liles, Brandan Horner and Armidale's Kyle Eichorn.

It will be the same scenario for the U18s squads.

Liles, Reid Gould, Josh Worpel (all Tamworth) and Armidale's Jimmy O'Brien, and Tamworth's Dana Constable and Armidale's Brittany Parker will all be participating in those with the initial 25 to be added to in October.
