The Werris Creek Rugby League Football Club has put on a hell of a party for its centenary, and former players and supporters have responded.
The guest list includes Creek products like NSW and Australian reps Peter and Graeme Wynn, NRL star Ben Smith and other top footballers who spent time as Magpies like Keith Harris and Bill Bishoff.
They join the many locals like club stalwarts Darby Sherlock and Ron Dellar who still live in the area for today’s reunion.
“It’s a big weekend,” Dellar said.
“There’s a lot of people coming.
“I know Keith Harris is coming.
“He only played one year with us but he’s coming back, so that’s good.” The Wynn boys rarely get to come back to the Creek but were looking forward to the reunion.
They both played their junior football with the Magpies.
“I was 11 and Graeme was nine,” Peter Wynn said.
“It was exciting playing in the minor league.
“We’d come up every Saturday on the bus.
“Sometimes they’d take all the teams that were playing against Werris Creek down to Taylor Oval as well.” The brothers were part of the 1975 Creek side that won the Group 4 Under 18s undefeated.
Grame played first grade when he was 17 before he moved to Newcastle and then on to Sydney to play for St George.
Peter went to Parramatta via the Illawarra competition.
They were soon in NSW and even Australian squads and these days Peter owns a huge sports store in Parramatta and Graeme is still involved in the game as the St George Harold Matthews (Under 16s) coach.
That means they don’t get to come back to the Creek often.
One bloke who never left though is long-serving coach Dellar.
He has been coaching Magpies teams on and off for nearly 35 years.
“It started in 1978,” Dellar said.
“I coached Werris Creek reserve grade under Bill Bishoff.
“He was the first grade coach for two years and I started the two years he was here.
“In the ‘80s I coached the under 18s when we were in Group 21.
“We made five grand finals in a row, only won two of them, but we made it.
“In ‘89 I coached Group 21 and we beat Group 4 and 19.
“In ‘90 we came back to Group 4.”
Former Balmain player Bishoff is another guest who is coming back from the Gold Coast for the reunion.
In addition to the big names there are those who are almost forgotten.
Magpies of all ages from all eras will be there, some for the first time in many years.
“There’s a kid who I coached in juniors who I’ve never seen since,” Dellar said.
“He was one of the toughest kids I ever had.
“Tommy Forrester was his name, from Currabub.
“Anyway, I haven’t seen him since 1986, but he’s coming.”
The festivities begin with markets at 9am today with a street parade to follow at 10.30am.
There will be a touch football game between Creek legends like Harris and Smith and players from the 1996 Clayton Cup side like Stewart Porter and Cory Wilson at 2pm after an unveiling of a plaque at David Taylor Oval at 1.30pm.
After that there is the reunion dinner at the tennis and bowling club from 6.30pm.
Sunday’s activities include a breakfast at the Commercial Hotel, a kids fun day at the oval and fireworks from 5.30pm.
