Defence Reserve Support Council New England regional manager Captain Shane Green said A4E was an exceptional supporter of defence reserves and employed Private Sally Simmonds, who is a medic with the 12th/16th Hunter River Lancers.

Captain Green presented A4E manager Andrew Manks with a plaque recognising the company as a supportive employer.

The business also proudly displays a sticker, marking itself as supportive defence reserve employers, on its front window.

“It is important to recognise the contribution of supportive employers in the region and give them a pat on the back when we can,” Captain Green said.

Ms Simmonds served on Operation Resolute in Darwin, which is a border protection operation, and was away from her full-time employer for six months.

She said she found it easier to be committed to both her full-time employment and her role with the Army Reserve because A4E was so supportive of both roles.

Mr Manks said her absence didn’t disrupt the company because they were very flexible, and could move people around into different roles when needed, such as when Ms Simmonds was away in her defence role.

“The employer support payments also means we can employ someone in her absence,” he said.

“Being a defence reservist makes her a stronger manager, which rubs off on everyone else. I would definitely recommend other businesses sign up to be supportive employers.”
