THE long-serving managing editor of The Northern Daily Leader is leaving the newspaper.
John Sommerlad’s decision to pursue another career option has been announced to staff and he will leave The Leader in April.
He has had a 31-year career with Fairfax Media and its previously merged entity Rural Press Limited.
He came to Tamworth as The Northern Daily Leader’s executive editor more than 16 years ago.
Following the retirement of Robert Darby, Mr Sommerlad was appointed managing editor of the company’s Tamworth group.
Mr Sommerlad’s decision to leave the newspaper industry ends a 101-year family connection with provincial newspapers over three generations, most of which has been in the New England and North West.
Mr Sommerlad said he had thoroughly enjoyed his time at The Northern Daily Leader and thanked the staff for their contribution to the newspaper’s publishing effort and its business units.
