POLICE believe a fire which severely damaged a vacant West Tamworth home was deliberately lit.
Carthage St fire station Commander Bob Luck said witnesses reported seeing kids running from the home in Green St before the fire began at 5.40pm on Monday.
Three Fire and Rescue NSW units attended from West Tamworth and Tamworth and firefighters were able to control the blaze – which began in one of the side bedrooms – quickly.
Commander Luck said although the rest of the home sustained smoke and heat damage, the fire was mainly contained to the bedroom and part of the roof.
He said neighbours who saw smoke coming from the home were concerned there were still people in there at the time of the fire, but in fact they had moved out a week prior.
There were no injuries reported.
Commander Luck said Tamworth police established a crime scene to investigate the circumstances of the fire.
