84yo man robbed in Tamworthcar park

A MAN has appeared in court charged over the robbery of a liquor store and an 84-year-old man last weekend.

Robert Andrew Canham appeared in Tamworth Local Court yesterday charged with robbery armed with an offensive weapon, aggravated robbery and demanding property with intent to steal.

Police said a man entered a liquor store on Brisbane St, Tamworth shortly before 9pm on Saturday armed with a knife and demanded money from the staff.

The male staff members refused and the man fled the store with a six-pack of alcohol, pursued by staff.

The offender evaded the men.

On Sunday morning, an 84-year-old man was approached by a male in the carpark of a Tamworth club who claimed to be armed and demanded the elderly man’s money.

A struggle followed, during which the younger man made off with the older man’s wallet.

The elderly man suffered minor injuries in the incident.

Police attended and a short time later arrested a 42-year-old man by the victim’s identification.

Some of the victim’s property was recovered.

Later that day, police executed a search warrant on a boarding house in Tamworth and seized a number of items, believed to be linked to the robberies.

Canham was refused bail to appear at Tamworth Local Court on April 24.
