Body found in Tenterfield national park identified

Police have formally identified a body found at a remote campsite at a Tenterfield national park last month.

The man has now been identified as 61-year-old Victor Andrew O'Neon of Mt Gravatt, Queensland.

On 1 February 2013, police were called to Basket Swamp National Park, approximately 25 kilometres north-east of Tenterfield, after a park ranger located the body of a man near a remote campsite.

Police are currently preparing a brief for the information of the Coroner.

Detectives from New England Local Area Command are continuing their investigations into the incident under Strike Force Treacy.

They believe the man had been camping in the Basket Swamp area for several weeks prior to his death.

Police have forensically examined the area where the man's body was found, and conducted a search of the campsite and surrounding bushland.

Investigators are renewing their appeal for anyone who was recently camping in the area or who may have information about the matter to contact Armidale Police Station or Crimestoppers.
