No charges over Tamworth Showground kiosk break-in

TWO men who forced open a roller door in a kiosk at the Tamworth Showground on Sunday night have yet to be charged.

In pouring rain between 6.20pm and 7pm, the men, one of whom was 19, forced open the door.

This act triggered an alarm and security guards investigated.

The two men ran across the road and into the cemetery, where the 19-year-old stopped when challenged by security – but the other man, possibly a juvenile, fled.

Tamworth police arrived and arrested the 19-year-old.

Tamworth police Sergeant Stephen Fuhrmann said it seemed like an opportunistic crime.

He said the 19-year-old told investigating police, when interviewed back at Tamworth Police Station, “they were in the area to shelter from the rain, but then, while they were there, decided it would be a good idea to break into the place”.

Police were considering which charges to lay and have released the man without charge.

“It would appear that they’ve got further inquiries to be made ... they’re going to seek advice as to what the most appropriate charges would be for these fellows,” Sergeant Fuhrmann said.
