WITH the charity of fellow Australians in mind, a Tamworth man is organising a fundraising event to help victims of recent bushfire and flood disasters.
20-year-old organiser Tim Simpson said the idea behind the Australian Flood and Fire Relief Night was to have a fun evening out with some great food, music and people, but ultimately to raise much-needed funds for victims of the Queensland floods and Coonabarabran bushfires.
Motivated by a simple drive to help those in need, Mr Simpson said watching recent news coverage had helped spur the event into action.
“It was pretty scary watching all those things happen in such a short space of time and so close to home,” the young Tamworth businessman said.
“It could have happened anywhere.”
“Basically the event is to help out our fellow Aussies in need.”
The event, at the Treloar Park Tennis Club next Saturday, will feature entertainment by Tamworth singers Steve Charles and Sally-Anne Whitten and a two-course dinner with raffles and auctions throughout the night.
With tickets costing $50 at the door, Mr Simpson said all profits from the night will go equally
to the Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery and the Warrambungle Shire Mayor’s Bushfire Appeal.
Mr Simpson said tickets are selling fast and he was expecting to raise around $6000 for the two charities.
Busy doorknocking Tamworth businesses yesterday, Mr Simpson said he was still looking for donations of goods for the raffle and auction and would welcome any entertainers who would like to perform on the night.
“We’ve got a lot of support so far, but more is very welcome,” Mr Simpson said.
“We’ve got artists donating CDs, businesses donating food, it’s going to be a great night and hopefully we can raise a lot of money for those in need,” Mr Simpson said.
