That was one of the upshots of a TJC review of last Sunday’s Jardel Cup/Country Music Cup meeting on Wednesday night following some disappointing turnover results at the Country Music Cup meeting for the club.
President Tim Coates said last Sunday’s Jardel Cup/Country Music Cup meeting produced some ‘fantastic racing”.
“However the results from a turnover perspective were less than we had hoped for,” Coates said.
“The racing was fantastic though, the track was on fire and we had a good quality field for the Jardel Cup as well.
“But the review last night found it might be more suitable to run next year’s Jardel Cup on the Tamworth Cup meeting.
“We’re looking to build the Tamworth Cup day up and that would be a strong race to have.
“It would give the club at least three major races – Tamworth Cup, Mornington Handicap and Jardel Cup – with the chance to also slot a major sprint race into the program.”
Tamworth races again next Friday with an eight-race TAB program that Coates hopes will produce better turnover.
“It should be an interesting meeting,” he said.
“It’s one of those days where anything could happen.
“It’s also our final meeting before we have a break and then come back for our lead-in to the Tamworth Cup.
“March 22 is our next meeting, the first of four culminating in the April 28 Tamworth Cup meeting.”
Next Saturday’s Bingara Cup meeting starts a run of Cup meetings including the Walcha Cup (Friday, February 8), Quirindi Cup (Friday, February 22), Moree Cotton Cup (February 23), Guyra Cup (Sunday, March 3), Aberdeen Cup (March 12) at Muswellbrook and Armidale Cup (Monday, March 18).
“We’d like to think the Armidale Cup (1900m) horses might be headed towards the Mornington Handicap (2200m) here on Cup day,” Coates said.
“Last year Kwilas Law finished second in the Armidale Cup and then second in the Mornington.”
Nominations for next Friday’s Tamworth meeting close 11am Monday along with nominations for Bingara.
The $9000 Bingara Cup (1300m) is the feature race at Bingara’s five-race Cup meeting.
