IN WHAT has been described as a “bloody foolish” act, five fires were lit in and around the old Rosary College site on Warral Rd yesterday.
A spokesman from the West Tamworth Fire and Rescue NSW said one fire threatened stock and horses when it got away into a paddock.
“A fire on the western side had got away into the paddock which had stock and horses in it, but luckily we were able to control it,” he said.
“We had all our resources at the fire with two pumpers and a tanker and 20 firefighters. This is a very foolish act to light fires on a day like today, with all the publicity we’ve had over the last few days. To light a fire on a total fire ban on a day like yesterday is bloody foolish.”
The spokesman said young people were see leaving the area.
“These young people have no respect for the law,” he said.
“It could have been disastrous. It’s just a stupid act.”
