TAMWORTH is forecast to hit 42 degrees today and tomorrow as the heatwave conditions continue – with city pools crowded – and opening hours set to be increased.
Yesterday was so hot Tamworth city pool’s opening hours have been extended until 8pm.
Tamworth Regional Council pools technical officer Gary Johnson said the plan had been to extend the opening time from Monday.
“But we have had so many requests from families in particular, that we decided to bring it forward,” he said.
“The forecasts for January are so hot it would be silly not to offer that extended hour.
“South West Memorial Pool is busy with waterpolo most week nights so the decision to extend city pool’s hours will give people a chance to continue to cool off into the night.
“That will only increase during the country music festival too.”
Figures for pool attendance over the past month aren’t available yet but Mr Johnson said he expected record-breaking attendances.
“Compared to last year, when things were dire, we are facing a situation where there is just so much demand,” he said.
“We’re definitely in for a ripper of a summer.”
The region’s six other pools are also experiencing higher visitor numbers.
“Barraba in particular is recording high volumes of swimmers,” Mr Johnson said.
