About 3.20am yesterday, a 52-year-old woman was woken by noises outside her home in Cole Road, West Tamworth.
She was confronted by a man at her front door who forced his way inside.
The man allegedly punched the woman in the face before threatening her and demanding the keys to her car.
Police have been told a second man then walked out of a bedroom inside the home, carrying a bag.
The two men fled the house and the woman's car was driven by a third unknown person who ran from the area after crashing into a neighbouring fence.
Investigators would like to speak to three males they believe may be able to assist them with their inquiries.
They are also appealing to members of the public who may have seen anything suspicious in the area to contact them.
One of the males is described as being of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander appearance, 163cm tall and wearing a hooded jumper.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Tamworth Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
