Police on Wednesday night laid murder charges against Cecil Briggs following the death of a 47-year-old man assaulted inside his home in Armidale on Christmas Eve.
A police source told Fairfax Media the men were known to police and knew one another.
"We understand it was a disagreement that got out of hand. It could have happened on any day of the week and was not Christmas related, it is unfortunate and sad it happened over this period," she said.
Police described it as "vicious attack".
Briggs has been refused bail and will appear at Armidale Local Court on Thursday.
About 3.30pm on Monday, one of the men was allegedly assaulted during an incident inside his Brown Street unit. The man was allegedly repeatedly struck with a wooden chair leg and a baseball bat.
The victim was taken to Armidale Hospital where he died on Boxing Day night.
Police arrested the 40-year-old man at the scene a short time after the incident on Monday but re-arrested him and charged him with murder following the death.
