The car park is located to the east of the hospital, near the intersection of Johnston and Smith streets, and is available to patients, visitors and staff.
It has been built to balance car parks at the site during the redevelopment of the hospital.
Staff – particularly those who arrive at, and leave, work in daylight hours – have been urged to use the car park to leave more spaces closer to the hospital free for the community and those who work night shifts.
More than 40 spaces will also be built in the car park behind the rehabilitation ward before Christmas.
Tamworth hospital general manager Brad Hansen said this would mean the hospital could maintain the number of existing car parks while work to divert services, build new roads and
demolish old buildings was undertaken.
“When the major construction work begins in mid-2013 we will have more than 160 additional car spaces available on-site to meet the needs of patients, visitors and staff,” Mr Hansen said.
