This grassroots, community-based organisation provides practical support services and financial assistance to local families affected by cancer, so the $6500 raised during 2012 was very gratifying, Can Assist Tamworth publicity officer Kaye Burgess said.
That total included $250 raised from a Christmas pudding being raffled.
The main raffle on the day, a beautiful, handmade quilt donated by the Peel Country Quilters, was won by Di Gillon.
“It was a great day with lots of laughs and plenty of community spirit,” Mrs Burgess said.
A beautifully touching moment was when a certificate of appreciation, written in Braille, was presented to visually impaired pianist Ross McGregor, who is always donating his time to make Can Assist events more fun and entertaining, Mrs Burgess said.
There was plenty of food and laughter, too.
“Guests were treated to miniature sandwiches, pinwheels and home-made cakes and slices, washed down with lashings of tea and coffee – and all made by the happy band of Can Assist committee members and volunteers.”
It was important not to let their organisation – and many other volunteer organisations like theirs – die out, Mrs Burgess said.
