TAMWORTH Shorikan Karate-Do Club emerged from the Australian Koshiki titles boasting five national
champions.
The club hosted the titles over the weekend and the martial artists excelled with Brendan Dewhurst, Casey Buggy, Adam West, Leanne Brown and Brett Taylor winning their respective divisions.
Dewhurst was successful in the 10/11yrs kumite, Buggy the 8/9yrs kumite, West the over 85kg kumite, Brown the under brown female Kata and Taylor the under brown male kata, the latter four snaring their first national title.
Dewhurst was also placed second in the 10/11yrs kata and Taylor third in the 75-80kg under brown kumite.
Instructor Clint Chaffey was extremely pleased with the results of his charges and the overall success of the
championships.
"We're looking like holding the nationals every year after such a successful event," he said.
Along with the five titles, Tamworth also walked away with 12 second places and four third finishes.
Kristie Chaffey and Ben Glover both tasted double silver, Chaffey judged second in the 55-65kg kumite and the open black belt kata, while Glover was second in the 65-75kg kumite and open black belt kata.
Danny Daley picked up silver in the 14/15yrs under 50kg kumite, Ben McLeod the 12/13yrs kumite, Tyler Heywood the 8/9yrs kumite, Adam Connors the 75-85kg under brown kumite, Ken Holgate the under 65kg under brown kumite and Olivia Ledingham the over 65kg under brown kumite.
Third placings also came the way of Brady Hardcastle in the 16/17yrs kumite, Ken Holgate under 65kg under brown kumite and Natalie Flemming under brown female kata.
The club is now focusing on its next major competition – the Te-Ashi Kai-Shin Karate National Belt Challenge at Dubbo where Scott Chaffey will be hoping to defend his title.
