O'Dell, who was 23, played inside centre for the reserve grade side on Saturday in Barraba's 24-15 win over Pirates at the Barraba Sportsground and was travelling home to Bareela that evening when his truck left the road at Slatey Gully Bridge approximately three kilometres west of the Barraba Golf Club.
O'Dell learned his rugby in Barraba as a junior and played in the reserve grade backline after coming up through the under 19s.
He also co-coached the Barraba reserve grade side last season.
Barraba Rugby Club secretary Jenny Middlemiss said O'Dell was an integral part of the Barraba team, club and committee.
"This is a major blow for the town and the Barraba Rugby Club," she said.
"He will be sadly missed by all his team-mates."
A graveside service will be held for O'Dell at 2pm tomorrow at the Barraba Cemetery.
