WHILE a win or draw in their two games today will secure North West a semi-final ticket in the NSW CHS Girls' Touch Carnival at Wellington, the PSSA boys hockey side is already into its semi-final at Goulburn.
Yesterday the hockey boys, one of seven North West hockey, golf, touch, squash and softball teams at various State carnivals, played "copybook hockey", improving with each game, manager Gabrielle Purdy said.
They beat Sydney East 3-0 (Peter Orienstein, Doug Agnew and Hamish Storrie scoring the goals), Sydney West 4-0 (Luke Evans 2, Doug Agnew and Sam Levick), and Mackillop 5-0 (Doug Agnew 2, Sam Levick, Matthew Willis and Peter Orienstein).
"They did everything I asked of them," Purdy said.
"We finished on top of our pool on goal differences, now we play the second-placed team in the other pool. The worst we can do now is fourth."
The girls touch team won one and drew the other two of their games yesterday.
The previous day they won three from four.
Seven games in two days has been "tough", manager Ian Ryan said.
Tamworth's Kate McDonald contributed tries in all three games yesterday.
Yesterday North West drew 2-all with Sydney West (McDonald and Boggabilla's Kristy McGrady scoring), followed by a 1-all draw with South Coast (McDonald) and a 4-3 win over Riverina. Narrabri's Natasha Adams scored two while McDonald and Inverell's Kylie Emmerson found the line once.
"We've lost only one in seven games. It's been very tight," Ryan said.
Today North West takes on Western and Sydney North.
At Narrandera, North West's golf teams struggled with the difficult course on day two of their tournament.
After a strong performance and 79 on day one, Tenterfield's Cameron Butler could not maintain the momentum and had to settle for 88 yesterday. Farrer's Nick Inglis found the tightened course to his liking to improve by 10 shots for 76.
Diana Barnes, Melinda McBeath and Ashleigh Dunleavy all improved on their first day's performance to score at least three shots better.
North West squash teams are out of contention for a State title in the singles at Thornleigh, but yesterday improved in the teams events, manager Steve Frazer said.
The boys won on a countback to Sydney North while the girls registered a 2-nil win over South Coast.
The PSSA softballers "continued to improve" at Albion Park. Losses to Sydney South West (21-6) and South Coast (15-8) were followed by a 24-3 win over Barrier.
Standouts were pitcher Kate Jenner, who secured the team's only home run, Narrabri West's Emma Brien as catcher, Attunga's Amelia Renshaw in fielding and Coolah's Sally Esdaile with the bat. Top scorers were Amelia Renshaw (6) and Tamworth's Sophie Beer (5).
Today they play-off for positions seven to 12.
