In the first running of the event for a decade, the local rider – who specialises in motorcross – shone on the speedway and won the event from Jon Nash and Peter Noble.
Vermunt won all four of the speedway races but then struggled in his pet event because of suspension problems.
“I had a bit of luck to win and it was great to have a run on the new motorcross track,” Vermunt said.
“It is brilliant and made for good racing.”
Tamworth Motorcycle Club president Paul Slade said a good crowd turned out at Oakburn Park to watch the 78 riders go around in the weekend’s racing.
“It is only going to get bigger as well. The track was very good and will improve as it settles down in the next few months,” Slade said.
One of the volunteers who put plenty of time into building the track, Rod Bruce, said there was plenty of good feedback about the track.
“We have got to make a few little changes but everyone was pretty happy with it,” Bruce said.
Last weekend’s event is the start of a pretty busy program with the Jim Turner Memorial Meeting this weekend, followed by a massive motorsports expo the weekend after.
Slade said all local motorsports disciplines would be represented with plenty of static displays and race action planned for the expo.
These events will be followed later in the year by an inland invitational motorcross race, which should be huge.
