In an effort to ensure their current strength continues through into the future, the team has been developing the enthusiastic young talent around town.
The popular team is just about to make an assault on the Waratah State Softball League with games at Manly on June 2 and 3.
But in preparing for the future, the Tornadoes have introduced the Whirly Wind Squad, the Mini Tornado Girls and Mini Tornado Boys’ squads.
“They’ve been a huge hit,” Tornado head coach Mary Klasen said.
Klasen has also taken on the position of coach for the new squads, and will be assisted by her sister Joanne Klasen, and Tamworth Under 14 coaches (and Tornado members) Katrina McHattan, a member of the NSW Country Under 23 side, and Kellie Durant.
Both young players are keen to pass on their knowledge to the junior players.
And while the Klasens, McHattan and Durant are in the box seat, the squad will be “helped out” by Tornado members.
The program kicks off with attendance at the Tornado induction day at West Tamworth Leagues Club this Sunday, and winds up on September 30 when a development squad will take on the Tornadoes.
Prior to Sunday’s induction, the Mini Tornado Girls Squad will have a skills session from noon to 1.20pm at the Riverside diamonds.
