GOLFERS will throw open the Coolah course to runners on Monday when a strong team of Tamworth zone athletes converges on the facility to contest the NSW PSSA and CHS Regional Cross-Country Championships.

The first six placegetters in each of the 9yr to 18yr boys and girls’ divisions from recent zone championships will make up the Tamworth zone teams at Coolah on Monday.
In last year’s regionals held at Wallabadah, the Tamworth zone primary team gained 17 representatives to travel to state, and won five of the eight team events.
“We’re aiming for a similar result this time,” primary convener and team manager Mike Cashman said.
Around 1000 runners will take to the Coolah course on Monday, all eyeing a spot in the North West team to contest the State PSSA and CHS Cross-Country Championships at Eastern Creek on June 29.
Expected to do well in the primary division are Somerton’s Mitchel Swain (10), Kootingal’s Ben Ballantine (11) and Hillvue’s Russell Christian (12). All were regional champions last year.
They’ll be pushed along by talented team-mates, Timbumburi’s Marcus Thomson (9), Kootingal’s Josh Perizzolo (10), Kootingal’s Daniel Russ (12), and Moonbi’s Leah Fisher (10).
“We have a very promising beginner in nine-year-old Rosanna O’Neill from Oxley Vale,” Cashman said.
“She’ll be a strong contender,” he said.
Though the Tamworth crew will be up against some handy runners from around the region.
They include Armidale City’s Hayley Ford (11), Deepwater’s Erin McDonald (10), Martin’s Gully’s Elizabeth Gowan (11), and Curlewis’s Arlon McDonald (11).
