The 16-year-old was allegedly stabbed during a fight with another boy of the same age on Sunday afternoon in the main street of Moree.
He was taken to hospital but died.
It is understood a funeral date has not yet been set for the Pallamallawa teen and TAFE student.
Just days before the incident, Mitchell – “Mitch” as he was known to friends – had been updating his status on his Facebook page, writing about a “fun night in Moree” with his friends, and about how he had been in Tamworth just the week before.
A Facebook page has also been set up in his memory which continued to receive dozens of messages of condolence yesterday.
Friends have described him as someone who could make everyone laugh and a top bloke who will never be forgotten.
His alleged murderer, meanwhile, remains in custody after a court appearance just a day after the crime took place.
He will next appear at the court in two weeks time.
