FOR the past 15 years, I have been writing letters to the editor. I am very fortunate that I live near a corner store that opens at 7am, seven days a week. For six of those days I am able to buy The Leader and read it while having my breakfast. It’s a good way to start the day. My favourite is the Letters to the Editor on the opinion page, which I see daily. Without the letters, this page for me is not complete, especially when it happens three times a week.
At first I blamed the editor, then realised that this section of the paper is freely available to all writers and readers of The Leader. So, I now question, have all the problems of this State been solved? Is it okay if Premier Iemma sells off and privatises our electricity against the wishes of the majority of NSW citizens, including unions and members of his own Labor Party?
When was the last time we saw pages and pages of passionate letters to the editor? I recall a few, when Tamworth Radio lost its country music program, amalgamation of councils and the health system. I think one of the biggest protests revolved around the relocation of the Sudanese refugees to Tamworth.
I believe there is a fine line between democracy and a dictatorship. It’s time to act.
