Gold Coast chasing Bosnich

07 Aug, 2008 11:07 AM

New A-League franchise Gold Coast United is reportedly preparing for a move on controversial goalkeeper Mark Bosnich.

SBS's World Game website is reporting that Miron Bleiberg, the coast's head coach, was so impressed with Bosnich's 25-minute effort for the Central Coast Mariners in the Pre-Season Cup win over the Queensland Roar he is keen to land his signature for the 2009-2010 season.

The Mariners will not offer Bosnich a long-term deal but will use him in the early rounds of the A-League season in place of suspended stopper Danny Vukovic.

Former Manchester United and Chelsea keeper Bosnich, now 36, is trying to get his football career back on track after tumbling from grace through a string of drug and alcohol incidents and eventual bankruptcy.

Bleiberg, the former Roar mentor, said despite Bosnich being keen to return to Europe, he could see him fitting in well as part of the foundation team on the tourist strip.

"Mark is still obviously top quality. He's worked hard to put behind his lack of activity in the past few years and if you add his off-field quality he can be a star in the A-League," Bleiberg told SBS.

"I haven't spoken to him and until we (United) get our licence (expected to be later this month) we cannot officially approach players.

"But I think the fact he's 36 isn't an impediment for him. You can see he's not too far off his former playing weight and his desire and enthusiasm to prove people wrong is obviously very strong.

"He's one of a few options we're looking at."

Bosnich hasn't ruled out remaining in the A-League.

"It's really just a game-to-game, day-to-day, week-to-week thing and I'm not about to make any big claims about what I might or might not do," Bosnich told the website.

"There are plenty of people out there waiting for me to falter - and I don't want to give them the chance to say 'I told you so'. I'm enjoying every minute of being back here and working with a great bunch of lads at the Mariners."
