Footy Show apology 'did more harm'

Footy Show apology 'did more harm'

13 May, 2009 05:08 PM
A young woman left suicidal after group sex with members of an NRL football team was "dehumanised" for a second time when Channel Nine presenter Matthew Johns failed to apologise to her directly on The Footy Show last week.

In a Four Corners program that aired on ABC television last night, the woman, known only as Clare, said she had sex with Johns and another player from Johns' former club Cronulla when the team toured New Zealand in 2002.

Clare, who was 19, said up to 10 other players and staff were in the room at the time, fondling her and masturbating against her wishes.

In a preemptive strike last Thursday night, Johns appeared on his popular rugby league panel show to apologise for the "embarrassment" caused by the incident, stressing the matter had been investigated by police and no charges had been laid.

But Brisbane Rape and Incest Survivors Support Centre counsellor Karin Cheyne said the apology, in which Johns made mention only of the hurt he had caused his wife and family, showed player acceptance of their own bad behaviour was a long way from improving.

"The most disgusting thing was the pat on the shoulder he got from the guy sitting next to him (co-host Paul Vautin) on the panel," Ms Cheyne said.

"I think she (Clare) would have seen that and felt dehumanised all over again. It also shows that the attitude in football is `Don't worry mate, you didn't do anything wrong.'

"Well, if there isn't something wrong with 12 men being in a room watching a 19-year-old girl (having sex) and masturbating themselves, I don't know what is."

Ms Cheyne said the performance by Johns, now an assistant coach at the Melbourne Storm, discredited claims by NRL boss David Gallop this morning that inroads had been made to change player attitudes towards women since an alleged gang rape scandal involving the Canterbury Bulldogs at Coffs Harbour in 2004.

"The culture of football - this toxic mix of alcohol, sex and sport - has to change...and while education is part of it, there has to be punishment involved," she said.

"If they (clubs) are going to create the gladiator on the field, they have to prepare them for when they get off it. These men have got to be taught to use their brains, not just their dicks."

Ms Cheyne said the public view that "football groupies" or women who chose to "assert their sexuality" had to accept some blame in sexual abuse was just as damaging.

"That is a really common response towards victims of rape and sexual abuse victims and just another thing they have to live with."

She said the fact that charges were not laid did not mean the players had acted legally or appropriately.

"The mental pressure (Clare) felt to do this is about being demeaned, being put down and made to feel like what she wanted didn't matter; that she was not a person with valid feelings and rights.

"The fact that she has considered suicide is not surprising. Lots of women go through that, they self harm, they have difficulty forming relationships."

Asked if Clare would feel a sense of justice following the airing of last night's program, Ms Cheyne said it was unlikely.

"I think this morning she'd probably be re-experiencing what happened to her and is probably in shock.

"The horrible part is that there has been no validation for her."

was this woman paid for the story and if she was how can she be a beacon of truth, she should have turned down the money.

Matty Johns, you were a great personality. Your Reg Reagan, Your jokes and your passion. it made rugby league and channel nine fun. Channel nine made a harsh but true decision. but why did this lady suddenly come out after matty got over it? if it was a group attack why doesn't she mention the others? how bout you at the mercury make an offer to joey to have a column on league? it'd be great. i hope matty can get over it and live a better life.

One can only hope that this is the beginnng of wiping out the disgraceful behaviour and attitude towards women, which NRL players, Clubs and in particular Channel 9's show, have all been tacitly supporting for many years. But I won't hold my breath, winning a game of football seems to be paramount in Australia these days, at the expense of decency and high moral standards.

What a loser this Johns bloke is. He gives us males a bad name! Glad to never ever see him on t.v. again. The channel nine boss has made the right decision, now get rid of Voss, Vautin and Laila McKinnon, so people can then watch channel nine again.

Of course she wasn't paid for the interview - I have been personally involved with Four Corners and all they pay for is expenses eg: airfares if they have to fly someone. It angers me that people are saying this woman has only come forward 7 years later. Considering there was a police investigation at the time, obviously she came forward then also looking for help. Four Corners is investigative journalism - they investigate the story and then invite involved people to speak publically and it's up to them whether they do or not. Obviously this woman felt that she had the strength to now speak out publically. She also didn't mention the others because she stated the only one she definitely knew the name of was Matthew so that was the one she named.

Hey steph, what planet do you live on? you want the mercury to run a column by a self admitted drug user. No thanks! as far as Matthew johns getting over it, he should of thought of that while playing around when he is married. Lets just hope the victim and his wife will get over it in time. who cares about this loser! Bet his parents are thinking, how did we bring up two deadbeats for sons?

What about a clear-out of the rest of sleazebags on The Footy Show Panel - how many of them have been participants in group sex with young women? Do any of them actually understand the difference between "informed consent" and submission to a group of intoxicated males?

We all know what this woman was there for. We know hear she bragged about it after it happened. 7 years later she cried wolf. In for an extra dollar... 'Count'.. Clearly you have some underlying issues mate.

I am the mother of three aged 15, 17 and 19, both sexes, footy mad and two are rep players for rugby. Youth is classified as under 24 as per Aust Govt Centrelink Youth Allowance, medical professionals, and private health insurers because their brains are not yet fully developed in 'the power of reason'. My three children are on the way to adulthood and I will stay with them on the sidelines until they reach 25. "Clare" was 19 and I believe hoping to feel special and important, and after the event and in the days after she realised that it did not make her 'special and important'. My heart goes out to "Clare", she was only 19 and needs a lot of support and comfort so she can heal and go forward with her life. It would be very interesting to have a really good look at who in 'that' room was over 24 years of age.

Everyone out there with these pathetic comments grow up! Bragging and enjoying your self at the time and for the next 5 days, umm where does 'the crime' fit in here? Its a bit like the boy who cried wolf, you cant commit and carry out your sexual fantasies then turn around and cry about it 7 years later and destroy everyones life. What people choose to do in their private lives is there business and each individual is responsible for their own actions. It was consentual sex with Matty so everyone get over it!
