WEST Tamworth’s Narelle Follington is hoping to snare a ticket to New Zealand, buoyed by another national title success.
Late last month Follington teamed up with Sydney’s Yvonne Stanton to win the 40 and Over Ladies Doubles at the Australian Tennis Seniors Championships on the Gold Coast.
It continued Follington’s title streak at the championships, having been the mixed doubles champion the last three years in the 35s and Over.
She had a packed tournament schedule, competing in the teams, mixed doubles, ladies singles and doubles.
Follington and Stanton were the top seeds for the tournament and were unchallenged in their first two rounds.
That appeared to catch up with them in the third round, dropping the first set against former West Tamworth player and now Queenslander Janelle Spittle, and partner Sharon Hoole.
But they found their A game in the second set to prevail 2-6, 6-0, 6-0.
They then lost only three games in a straights set finals victory over Vanessa Deegan and Janine Keall 6-1, 6-2.
“It was probably the first time we’ve played together,” Follington said
“I play against her all the time.”
The third round win was some revenge for Follington after Spittle had beaten her in the semi-finals of the singles.
“She won the first set, I won the second and she the third,” Follington said.
The final 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 scoreline reflected what a tough match it was, with the pair on court for over two hours in hot conditions.
Spittle also had it over Follington in the teams event that started that week, with her NSW 2’s side finishing third.
“It was really funny. She was on my side of the draw in everything,” Follington said.
They also met up in the mixed doubles, but it was Follington and partner Martin Richards who were victorious 6-2, 6-4.
The number two seeds, they were knocked out in the semis by (ladies) doubles partner Stanton and Craig Bullivant in a tough three-setter 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.
“I was devastated by that. We’d won the last three years,” Follington said.
She said she was happy with how she played over the week at what was her sixth senior nationals, and is hoping the good results will continue through the year.
“I’ll be chasing points this year,” Follington said.
Canberra in Easter for the ACT Championships and the Queensland State Championships in July are just two of the events she has scheduled in her pursuit of points to make the Australian team to tour New Zealand.
