TAMWORTH High School’s boys’ tennis team might have created a little slice of school history yesterday when it won the State CHS Boys’ Tennis Knockout Final in Singleton.
THS beat Hunter Sports High seven sets to one in yesterday’s final at a neutral venue after last week’s final in Sydney was postponed because of the Wednesday dust storm.
Team manager Tony Coyle has been a teacher at THS for a number of years and he believes the 7-1 victory was THS’s first State CHS tennis title.
“I’m fairly sure this is our first tennis title,” Coyle said.
He said the fact a country comprehensive school had beaten a metropolitan sports high school only added extra lustre to the victory.
“We exceeded all our expectations,” Coyle said.
“Winning 7-1 was totally unexpected.
“We thought we had a reasonable chance but didn’t think we could win that convincingly,” he said.
Winning the two doubles rubbers to start with started the final in flying fashion for Tamworth High.
Daniel Nash and Zak Fielding combined to win their doubles 6-3 while Daniel Clements and Joshua Tan also won their doubles set 6-3.
“It was an ideal start,” Coyle said.
THS’s hopes received a set- back when number one, Nash, lost his singles set 6-4.
“He was beaten by a very good player,” Coyle said.
“Daniel is one of the best players for his age in the State and played well but had a hard match.”
Fielding then righted the THS ship with a convincing 6-2 win while Clements andTan both won 6-1.
To cap it all off, the reverse doubles was another clean sweep for THS.
Nash and Fielding won 6-1 while Clements and Tan triumphed 7-6 in a tiebreak.
