ROCKY Elsom and some of his Waratah teammates fly into Tamworth today to prepare for a big week of rugby promotion in and around the city.
The injured Wallaby, who was named captain of the Waratahs for 2012 last week, is recovering from a hamstring injury.
It’s not his first trip to
Tamworth.
He was also here in 2004 at a coaching clinic at Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School after just moving to rugby from rugby league.
Elsom, Drew Mitchell, Benn Robinson, Jasmin Murphy and Atiele Pakalani are the “advance guard” for the Waratahs, with the rest of the squad bussing to Tamworth tomorrow to prepare for Friday night’s pre-season trial against Samoa at Scully Park in Tamworth.
Barraba will be the first venue for Elsom and his advance guard where they will conduct a coaching clinic (5pm today) and then enjoy a BBQ dinner.
Tomorrow the Waratahs hit the local schools – St Eds, Hillvue and South Tamworth primary – and then a sign-on and clinic with the Tamworth juniors from 4pm at Ken Chillingworth Oval.
Tomorrow night they are also at Tamworth Rugby Club’s Viaduct Park base for some senior coaching before attending a mayoral reception from 6pm.
On Thursday it’s more of the same, visiting local schools while the Samoans arrive.
It then ramps up Friday with a 7’s tournament at Scully Park the main curtain-raiser before the trial kicks off about 7.30pm.
