IT’S crunch time for Central North.
The Kookaburras head to Armidale tomorrow for a final hit-out before launching their NSW Country Championship campaign, with plenty of questions still requiring answers.
One of the first priorities for coaches Andrew Verrell and Garry Walsh has been deciding on a squad.
That has proved a somewhat complicated process, co-ordinating unavailabilities and injuries, which have continued to plague them.
The latest casualty is Jack Walsh, who popped his shoulder out at training on Wednesday night.
He had to be rushed to hospital and the shoulder manipulated back in.
His injury comes on top of injuries to Jock Cameron and Doug Biffin, which Verrell is expecting will rule them out of tomorrow’s trial.
Ed Churchill and Matt Hannay are also confirmed as unavailable for tomorrow.
The framework of the squad has been mostly settled, although Verrell indicated they may look to bring another back, to cover for Walsh, and lock into the squad.
The major quandary is now juggling the personnel.
That is quite a puzzle, with a couple of options in most
positions .
“We’ve really got to get the balance right,” Verrell said.
In both the forwards and the backs there’s a few combinations for he and Walsh to look at, some of them new, with Elliot Tourle and Richard Perkins both coming back into the squad.
They have been unavailable for the trials to date and provide another couple of forms the backline can take.
“It’ll be a bit different in the backs but that’ll be a good thing,” Verrell said.
He’s hoping to see a bit more from them in attack tomorrow.
Against Newcastle Hunter they didn’t function well in the
midfield.
“We were rather flat-footed,” Verrell said.
It’s one of the issues they looked to address at training on
Wednesday.
Top of the list was the scrum.
“Our timing was terrible,” Verrell said of the game against
Newcastle.
“The set-up was wrong and we were too far away.
“They took the lead on us. We rarely got the hit on them.”
“When we did we looked all right.”
The other issue was that they weren’t really working as a pack, not to say as an eight there weren’t some positives.
The underlying issue is
confidence.
“We need to score some points,” Verrell said.
“If we score you’ll see the confidence of the team go up.”
“If we can put a few things together on Saturday and get a roll-on, you’ll see a different side.”
The trial will be the first time the Kookaburras and Lions have met since the Kookaburras defeated the Lions to win the Richardson Shield last year.
“I’d say New England will be up for it.
“They’ll want to give us a touch- up,” Verrell said.
Kick-off is at 5pm at Bellevue Oval following the U20s clash at 3pm.
