Tingha could provide the razzle-dazzle at Sevens

26 Feb, 2010 03:00 AM
TINGHA is back on the field tomorrow as it prepares for its Group 19 title defence in the fun and pressure-free environment of the Tamworth Sevens.

The Tigers had their best ever season in 2009 and hope to emulate that in 2010.

Pre-season events like the Sevens is a good way to start.

“It should be fun,” Tingha captain-coach David Walls said.

“It’s good to play against a few teams that we don’t normally get to play against.

“Guyra’s got a 10-a-side comp in a few weeks and we’ll hopefully have two teams at that.

“After that we haven’t got anything and we’ll look for a trial a couple of weeks after that.

“Hopefully we’ll have another good year,” he said

“We’ll lose a few players but we’ll pick a couple up.

“It’s still six weeks till our comp starts.”

Sevens football can be fast and suits players with speed and footwork.

The Tigers are known for that style of football already and they could be a chance in the tournament.

“It’ll be a fairly young side,” Walls said.

“We’ve got a few blokes who still haven’t got back to training yet so there’ll be two or three 18-year-olds.

“It’s a young man’s game, the sevens, and we’ve got a few fast blokes.

“We’ll probably lack a bit in size down there but there’s no pressure.

“We’ve been training for a month and it’ll be good to get them back into the footy.

“There’s only so much training you can do before they get sick of it.”

Tingha is drawn in pool B against Manilla, West Lions White, North Tamworth and Macksville.

It’s only February but it’s a big day of league in Tamworth tomorrow.

Not only does the Sevens kick off at Scully Park from 10.30am but the Wests Greater Northern Academy is hosting teams from the North Coast and Northern Rivers at North’s Jack Woolaston Oval, with games starting at 2pm.
