SIX local teams are eyeing places in various state finals as the Country Rugby League Cup and CRL Small Schools competitions reach the business end.
The Country Cup sees the best high school teams from across northern NSW meet at the University of New England in Armidale today for the semi-finals in under 13, 15 and open schoolboy events.
Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School is represented in all three age groups in the CRL Cup while Glen Innes has been given a late call-up in the under 15s.
“Farrer is representing our area in the 13s, 15s and opens after winning through the gala days we held locally,” CRL development officer Jamie McCormack said.
“Glen Innes has also got an opportunity in the under 15s after we had a very late withdrawal from Kingscliff High in the 15s and opens.
“So Glen Innes has taken that spot, which is good for our area.”
Farrer has a good record in this competition, with a number of state titles in the under 13s and 15s over the years.
In the under 13s, Farrer will take on Woodlawn College from Lismore, Brisbane Waters College from the Central Coast and Macksville High.
Farrer and Glen meet Nambucca High and All Saints Maitland in the 15s and in the opens, Farrer’s challengers are Newman College from Port Macquarie and All Saints Maitland.
The competition takes on a round robin format.
“There’s 18 games of football and it’s high quality,” McCormack said.
“I’m sure plenty of people will travel to watch and it should be a good day for
football.
“The winners progress to the state final on August 11 at Dubbo.”
In addition to the three northern champions in the Country Cup heading to Dubbo, there is also an opportunity for two small schools to be there on finals day.
Inverell’s Holy Trinity Catholic College will take on Rafael’s College from Cowra in the under 13s semi-final today while in the under 16s, Warialda High meets Oberon High.
Those games are at
Coonabarabran.
“Warialda won the under 16s last year so they’re the defending champions in that age division,” McCormack said.
“It’s an opportunity for both sides to make the final, which would be great for our area.”
The Armidale games start at 9.30am.
