GROUP 21 RUGBY LEAGUE
SINGLETON Greyhounds backrower Clinton Tull was a runaway winner of Group 21’s highest honour last night.
The talented lock was named Group 21’s 2NM player of the Year at the Muswellbrook Workers Club in front of a large crowd representing all Thiess Services Group 21 clubs.
Tull’s dominance in voting was a standout, the young lock doubling the points of his nearest opponent.
He will be a key player in Singleton’s grand final game against Greta Branxton Colts in Singleton on Sunday.
The Greyhounds received plenty of pre-grand final boosts also, with young winger/fullback Thomas Ernst being named the Matthews Jewellers Rookie of the Year.
Merriwa’s Zach Morgan and Scone’s Justin Whitehead were joint winners of the Morgan Maintenance Reserve Grade Player of the Year, sharing the Robert Lowrie Trophy.
Under 18 Player of the Year was won by Muswellbrook’s Kade Boney, who is contracted to Canterbury Bulldogs.
On a big night, the leading pointscorers in each grade were also named.
Singleton’s Kurt Neely won the Danny Gleeson Shield for the second successive year after scoring five tries and kicking 51 goals.
Morgan also won the Leon Paag Shield for reserve grade for the second successive year after scoring 12 tries and booting 34 goals.
First grade’s Neil Barry Shield went to Singleton winger Alan Harris.
He scored six tries and booted 60 goals for a total of 144 points.
Group 21 officials also named the Group 21 Team of the Year as well as presenting Henry Page with his ARL Centenary Medal.
Group 21 publicity officer Joel Gosper said gates would open at 8.30am Sunday for the 2008 grand finals.
Singleton and Greta Branxton Under 18s begin the big day with a 10am kick-off in their junior grand final.
The two clubs play in all three grades, the first grade grand final starting at 2.15pm at ResCo Park.
