TAMWORTH’s Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre comes alive with cutting action again tomorrow when the NCHA National Finals begin.
The NCHA is running three days of finals action from 8am daily with competitors from all over Australia vying for year-end national titles.
NCHA’s Nicky Smith said exciting cutting from Youth through to Open makes it an “event not to be missed”.
“Our Open Cutting event held on Saturday will see many amazing trainers such as Todd Graham from Kingsthorpe in Queensland, who is the only Australian NCHA member to earn more than $1 million in prize money in the sport of cutting,” she said.
“Todd will be riding One Stylish Pepto along with Spins Miss Kitty who was the highest priced sale horse ever in the history of the NCHA.
“Todd also won the 2009 Tamarang Derby event on this mare.
“This match-up of horse and rider will certainly be a combination to be reckoned with.”
Up and coming Victorian trainer Corey Holden also has two entries this year.
Holden has lifetime NCHA earnings in excess of $360,000.
Mark Mulcahy who recently won the NCHA Gold Cup (January 16) is aboard Stylish Argyle Acres and looking for more success with his stallion.
Smith said cutters would compete for more than $40,000 in prize money.
“ Our Non Pro and Rookies event will see local competitors such as Jackson Gray from Moonbi and Wayne Baumann from Werris Creek fight it out on The Last Spin and Docs Lights Out,” she said.
“Cutting is such a family sport and the National Finals event will be host to father and daughter combination Campbell and Amelia Tonkin from Barraba.
“Amelia is currently sixth in the Open Non Pro National standings while father Campbell is leading the $3500 Non Pro category and is running third in the Rookies.
“Wife and mother Kerry Ann will also be competing in the Rookies.
“Brothers Phillip and Thomas Smith who recently took out the junior and senior divisions at the NCHA Gold Cup event, will again be looking for the finish line as Phillip is leading the Senior Youth standings, with brother Thomas currently in third place in the Junior Youth standings.”
