Kings of the sidecar

07 Feb, 2010 07:48 PM
DARRIN Treloar and Justin Plaisted added yet another Australian Long Track Sidecar title to their lengthy list of achievements at Tamworth on Saturday night.

The South Australian pair were among the national title winners on a huge night for the Tamworth Motorcycle Club and in front of a big crowd.

Cowra 17-year-old Todd Kurtz was another to score a big win.

He won the long track solo title after dominating the early rounds and will head to England in March as an Australian champion.

He beat Maitland pair Strider Horton and James Bevan into the minor placings in the final.

Treloar didn’t have it all his own way though.

He missed out on some early round points when he was excluded from a race and had to fight his way back from the repechage.

He won that easily and went on to claim the final and another Australian title to go with his other long track and speedway national trophies and world speedway title.

James Hinton and Blake Cox were second with Dave Muir and Mark Bright from north Queensland in third.

Cessnock’s Paul Caslick was probably the other big winner on the night as he picked up two national crowns.

He won the open class and airmax frame class titles.

Overall, it proved a successful night for the local club.

“It was the biggest crowd we’ve ever had there,” Tamworth Motorcycle Club president Paul Slade said.

“It was very successful.

“There would have been 2500 to 3000 there.”

That was a great result after the predicted wet weather not only threatened to keep the crowds away but also put the meeting in some doubt.

“I almost have no hair left,” Slade said.

“I thought we were going to get washed out for sure.

“But we had a wee sprinkle and it went around us.”

It was also a relatively trouble-free meeting with only a few minor accidents and injuries reported, a pretty good result considering the sheer number of bikes involved.

“There was nothing serious,” Slade said.

“We had a collarbone and one gash to the knee, which looked like a shark had taken a chunk out of it.

“But for the speed they’re doing it wasn’t much.”

The club is now looking forward to its next event.
