NEWCASTLE trainer Ken Lantry made the right decision to head north to Walcha yesterday with six-year-old gelding Tocapitalize.
The gelding won Lantry his second Elders Walcha Cup (1440m) with a long neck win over Wauchope gelding
Tizapaine.
Tamworth gelding All Again was just a neck away third.
Lantry had nominated his gelding for yesterday’s Canterbury meeting but opted for Walcha and produced what was his horse’s ninth career win.
“He’s been a very good horse for us,” Lantry said.
“And a much better horse than a lot of people think.”
It was also Lantry’s second Walcha Cup win after he first won with Calypso King way back in 1985.
“It was in my first year of training,” Lantry said.
“But this horse will win in town no worries.
“We’ll probably go to the Quirindi Cup with him now and I think he’ll run the 1600m there no worries.
“That win will top him off good.”
Alan Robinson was the winning jockey and it was also his second Walcha Cup winner.
“It’s a thrill to win a country cup like Walcha,” Robinson said.
“I’d like to thank Ken.
“He’s a great trainer and I’ve ridden a lot of winners for him over a lot of years.”
The runs of the placegetters were also outstanding while Armidale gelding He’s Full Of It finished a gallant fourth.
Frank Tanner trains He’s Full Of It at Armidale and is also likely to join Lantry at the Quirindi Cup.
“It was a very good run,” Tanner said.
“I was very happy with him.
“He had to work a bit hard and got caught out wide.
“The Quirindi Cup should be a good race for him if we can get a run.”
