All Again all the way in Quirindi Cup

27 Feb, 2010 03:00 AM
LEE Menser produced a heady and instinctive ride to win the $20,000 Akubra Quirindi Cup at her first attempt and hand Tamworth trainer Lesley Jeffriess another cup success yesterday.

Menser and All Again repeated their Glen Innes Cup triumph of just over a month ago with a powerful front-running run.

“It was terrific,” Jeffriess said.

She was almost celebrating a quinella, with Straw Vote pipped by Kwilas Law by three quarters of a length for second.

Jeffriess was still thrilled with Straw Vote’s run, and third, stepping up in company after a last-start win in the Bingara Cup.

It was All Again though that stole the show, and Menser’s ride.

The six-year old had a lot working against him, drawing out wide and carrying 56kg with Menser’s claim, but Menser made the race their own from a few hundred metres in.

She took him to the front almost immediately and that’s where he stayed.

“There was no pace on so I had to go to the front,” Menser said.

“I sort of had to take it in my own hands and hope it turned out.”

It was against Jeffriess’ instructions.

She had told Menser not to lead but she wasn’t complaining in the ring afterwards.

“It wasn’t planned to go to the lead but she (Menser) used her head and did well,” Jeffriess said.

Menser’s boldness had All Again holding around a four-length lead heading into the straight.

But while many a leader have been swallowed up in the dash to the finish, Jeffriess didn’t think he’d get run down.

“I wasn’t worried. He had a nice big lead,” Jeffriess said.

Menser was of a similar opinion.

“There was nothing there to catch him,” she said.

Straw Vote (Darren Jones) was the closest at the final turn but after Danzibaa (Allan Robinson) had a challenge and faded, Kwilas Law (Greg Ryan) ran on strongly down the outside.

Yesterday’s victory for All Again followed a third in the Walcha Cup earlier this month.

There he was drawn wide but didn’t get the run he got yesterday.

Winner Tocapitalize and runner up Tizapaine also jumped yesterday but finished back in the field.

For Menser the win was a memorable one.

“It definitely was a big thrill,” she said.
