SYDNEY 1 continued their York Cup reign in Tamworth yesterday but did face some stiff competition from the hosts.
The Sydneysiders collected their third successive York Cup and went close to making it a double, with their number two counterparts just being edged out by Moree in B Division.
The result had hinged on the final match between Inverell and Sydney (2), Inverell's 1-nil win allowing Moree to slip into the top spot.
A Division was a bit clearer, the defending champions undefeated for the weekend and finishing 10 points ahead of the Tamworth Frogs.
Tamworth did though finish with a trophy, the Tamworth (1) girls' side winning the inaugural Kim Small Shield, with the number twos coming in third.
It was Sydney's third trip to Tamworth for the Cup and it proved another successful one, even if the conditions were a bit challenging.
"It was good. They were very tough conditions this weekend," Sydney coach Rohan Tudor said.
"The team played very well given the conditions."
"We're very happy to win again and we'll be back again next year to defend it."
Tudor said the weekend was always an enjoyable one for the players.
"It's a good weekend for the kids. In the U11s there's no State championships and it's a good experience for the kids to come away in that team environment."
Tamworth-bred Olympians Kim Tuckwell (nee Small) and Matthew Smith were also on hand to present the trophies, Smith making a brief trip back to his former home.
He has also made a return to the hockey field this season.
"I had a bit of a break while I was at the racecourse (working for the AJC) but I'm back playing first grade in Sydney with UTS," Smith said.
While the side is struggling a bit and "closer to the bottom than the top" of the table, Smith said he was enjoying being back playing.
He has also started a PE course at ACPE and is hoping to move into teaching.
