Trainer's emotions to run high at Tamworth

10 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
BATHURST trainer-driver Peter Bullock returns to his old home town intent on winning today’s feature race – the $6000 Joan Bullock Memorial Pace (1980m).

Named in honour of his late wife and sponsored by the Bullock family, the fillies and mares C0 race highlights a big eight-race TAB program also including three heats of a Menangle series, Tamworth Harness Racing Club racing manager Laurie James said.

Bullock will drive Southwind Shannon in the Joan Bullock Memorial while Max Hughes will jump in the spider behind talented Beth Shannon.

“She’s a pretty smart little filly,” Bullock said yesterday of Beth Shannon who has won three of her 12 starts.

“She had a little setback and hasn’t had a run for a few weeks.

“The other filly goes all right too. She hasn’t won yet but has been racing around Bathurst without much luck.

“She’s a bit fitter than the other one too.”

Southwind Shannon has yet to win in 11 starts.

Both fillies are owned by Peter and Marie Neil and trained by Bullock at their Bathurst complex.

The Neils, who race as Rayngold P/L, also own Ebony Shannon, a four-year-old mare prepared by Darren Elder at Louth Park (near Maitland).

“I used to train her too,” Bullock said.

“She goes all right – always picks up a cheque and doesn’t run many bad races.

“So it would be nice if one of the three won for Peter and Marie.”

Bullock has also brought Racy Shannon and she will contest the final race of the day, the Advanced Inland Security C3-C4 Pace (1980m).

“She’s drawn the one but unfortunately Churchill Bromac is in that,” he said.

“I was hoping we might be able to dodge him. He’s going absolutely super.”

The Tamworth Gold Nugget winner won at Dubbo last Friday in fast time on a wet track.

He’s being prepared by Dean Chapple now, the Moonbi trainer-driver taking over from Churchill Bromac’s disqualified trainer Robert Clement.

THRC racing manager Laurie James said the Joan Bullock Memorial Pace is “a pretty handy race”.

“It does have a strong field,” he said.

While the three Shannon horses all have claims, so too does Cold Kentucky Rain, a three-year-old filly prepared by young trainer-driver Josh Osborn at Kurri Kurri.

She has had just the two starts for two seconds, the latest a half neck second in a Newcastle 1609m rating 2:02.4.

Tamworth mare Any Left might be small but she has a big motor for Anthony Mabbott (trainer) and Anthony Varga (driver).

She won at Tamworth two starts back, rating 1:59.1 for the 1609m before finishing fifth to Aces Reign in a Tamworth 1980m last time out.
