MELBOURNE Cup day might be horse racing’s big day of the year but the greyhounds got in on the act in Tamworth yesterday.
Although overshadowed by the gallops, running a dog meeting on the first Tuesday in November is becoming a traditional of its own at the club.
It also provided a maiden win for a problem child running her first race yesterday.
Getting Mum’s Scotch on the track has been a task in itself but she won the Carlo’s IGA Mixed Grade (402m) for Moonbi trainer Lee Codd.
“I’ve had her a month,” Codd said.
“This is her first start.
“She’s had some injury problems but I’ve fixed her up.
“She trialled here and went well.
“She didn’t run as quick as she did in the trial but she won the race and that’s the main thing.”
The bitch got out of the blocks well from box seven and led all the way around the turn and most of the way up the straight.
But Casino Raider (Lloyd Metcalf jnr) was hot on her tail and with 50m to go it drew level and probably even nudged in front of Mum’s Scotch.
Ride The Wave (Robert Munn) also lunged at the line and little separated all three dogs.
But Mum’s Scotch found something extra in the dying seconds and snatched the win by a head.
“I thought the five (Ride The Wave ) had won it,” Codd said.
“As I was walking back everyone was saying the five had won it and I was having a whinge.
“But then they said it was the seven.
“She fought back and that’s what she does.
“She’ll win more races.
“But she’s just learning, so to speak.”
The other two dogs couldn’t be split in a dead heat for
second.
The winning time was 20.27 seconds.
