Winning secret

LIGHTNING struck twice for Allan Robinson in yesterday's $30,000 Tamworth City Toyota Fillies and Mares Class 4 Handicap (1200m) at Tamworth when the Tim Martin-trained filly Secret Relations careered away with the feature race.

It was Robinson's second win in the race after partnering Auri to victory in 2004.

"She came from 14 too," Robinson told stable foreman Ryan Beves after dismounting yesterday.

"Once she got across there were no problems. She won easy."

Beves had worked in Tamworth for Craig Martin before returning to Sydney and working for Tim Martin about eight months ago.

"She's always shown a little bit," Beves said.

Yesterday she showed plenty to cross from her wide barrier and lead the field into the straight before kicking away for a four-length win over Dubbo mare Helgafell with the Marcus Wilson-trained Head Em Up a long neck away third.

Secret Relations ran 1min 8.95secs and surprised her trainer with the ease of her win.

"She killed them," Martin said.

"Once she got across and got a soft lead they were never going to get her. We were worried from barrier 14 they might chase up inside her and she'd get caught four wide.

"But they didn't and left her alone in front too."

He said she would now go to this month's $40,000 Queen of the North (1200m) at Port Macquarie.

Dubbo trainer Peter Nestor was delighted with the effort of four-year-old mare Helgafell.

"Considering what she has been through," Nestor said.

"She's had a rough time. Caught Ross River fever real bad and had 12 months off.

"She's had six or seven back and it wasn't until Gunnedah the other day she showed a glimpse of her old form."

Marcus Wilson was happy with the effort of Head Em Up too.

"It was a big run considering they ran 1:08," Wilson said.

"The winner got a soft lead too. But she's a handy little mare and will go to town now."

One of the runs of the race was Port Macquarie mare Genuinely.

The Marc Quinn-trained four-year-old missed the start by at least five lengths and was still able to finish.
