OUTSTANDING Tamworth teenager Hollie Webster has been selected in the NSW Australian Hockey League squad.
The 18-year-old striker, a star in the Services club’s grand final success in Tamworth in September, had been named in a large 40-plus player squad after the State Championships in Tamworth earlier this year.
She had played three AHL trials before being named in the final 22-player squad to contest next year’s AHL.
The 18-year-old, who has just completed her HSC at Tamworth’s Oxley High School, was surprised and excited to be named in the final NSW AHL squad.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Webster said yesterday.
“We had three trials over the last two months before they settled on their final 22.
“They’ll pick a final team of 16 to go to AHL games each weekend.”
It caps an exciting year for Webster, who captained the NSW under 18 girls’ side to a national championship in Melbourne earlier this year.
She also played State Under 21s and helped her Services side to a first grade grand final triumph.
Webster is hoping to study to be a physiotherapist at Sydney University but may yet defer any study plans.
To be a part of the NSW side she will have to move to Sydney next month.
“They train Tuesdays and Thursdays and again on weekends,” Webster said.
“Then they travel around playing AHL games before the finals in Sydney in April. I have to be in Sydney by January 15.
“It has been a huge year. I’ve been very lucky.”
Her selection was just one of the successes on the State representative front for Tamworth this week with 17-year-old Matt Willis named in the State Under 21 men’s side to contest the national Under 21 titles in Perth in February.
He joins former Tamworth junior stars Dane McIlveen and Sam Clifton in a side which finished second in this year’s national Under 21 titles in Darwin. Willis was a late inclusion in that side.
The talented midfielder turns 18 on the final day of next year’s Australian Under 21 titles.
Meanwhile, Tamworth, Armidale and Manilla junior stars continued their Pacific School Games hockey tournament with NSW Under 12 and 16 sides in Canberra yesterday.
After 10-nil wins over Northern Territory and Hong Kong, the NSW Under 16 girls’ side was drawn to play Tasmania with Armidale’s Georgina Morgan aiming for more goals after potting two against NT and a goal against Hong Kong.
The Under 16 boys’ side, which lost its first game to Victoria 2-1 and then beat Japan 8-1, was drawn to play Tasmania yesterday
afternoon.
The NSW Under 12 boys’ side, containing Manilla’s Isaac Farmilo and Tamworth’s Chris Ninness, was playing Queensland late yesterday afternoon in its fourth round clash after wins over Singapore (7-1), Western Australia (3-1) and Victoria (1-nil).
Tamworth’s Dana Constable and her NSW Under 12 girls’ side had a third round bye before tackling Tasmania last night.
It won its first two matches against ACT (3-nil) and South Australia (5-2).
