RUGBY LEAGUE: AFTER three decades as Group 4 president Frank Fish has decided he’s had enough.
The sometimes controversial boss has been through a lot of highs and lows over all those years but he says he has mostly enjoyed the ride.
“I’ve enjoyed it,” Fish said.
“I’ve made a lot of friends along the way and a few enemies as well, but that’s all part of it.
“It’s like when I retired from
football.
“The day comes some day.
“I think it’s time to let some younger people step in.
“But I’ll miss it.”
Fish’s list of achievements and the list of positions he has held within the game is almost endless.
He can’t even remember how many years he’s been the G4 boss.
But even before becoming an administrator he was a Country
representative as a player and then coached the Country side as well.
In fact his coaching exploits are legendary in bush footy terms.
“I’ve been pretty lucky,” he said.
“I’ve coached Northern Division to a win over the Pommies.
“I coached Northern Division when we won the East Coast Challenge and beat City once.
“We toured France and had a good tour over there.
“There’s been a lot of good times.”
Fish was also Northern Division president and for a time even joined the Country Rugby League executive as a
vice-president.
He was also Oxley Pioneers president this year and has been a Country selector for several years as well.
In that time he has run into some controversy, especially in his role as G4 president, but says he has always kept his integrity.
“I’ve always been honest,” he said.
“I went through all that business with the Boomerangs and we went to court when the Tamworth clubs tried to kick Narrabri out of the comp.
“But through all that it was never personal.
“I’ve won a few battles and lost a few battles along the way.
“I might not have always been right either but I wasn’t wrong very often.
“I’ve always been a straight shooter.”
And while there have been some trying times there have also been lots of positives.
Making friends, some of them in high places, is one of the good points.
“I’ve made some great friends like Laurie Daley and Ricky Stuart,” Fish said.
“In more recent times there’s Craig Bellamy and I’m good friends with Dave Gallop and all kinds of people.
“I’ll miss them but I’m not about to die so I’ll still see them somewhere.
“At least I don’t think I am.
“And if I can be of help anywhere or if any clubs want some advice I’d only be too pleased to help them.”
So he might not be completely lost to the game.
He will need to be replaced in the Group though.
After so long without any major changes the Group will now have to find a new leader but Fish is certain the Group will remain strong.
“There’s plenty of capable people in Group 4,” he said.
“In Group 4 we’ve been lucky because the people that have administered there have always been good people, rugby league people.
“We have the odd disagreement every now and then but that’s the same everywhere.
“They tried to put us in that Super League with Inverell and Warialda and we survived that.
“And they tried moving us around into other competitions.
“But I’m confident Group 4 will always be strong.
“There’s good people there like Barry Pratten and Harold Sutton, Ross Hamilton and Jimmy Cox.
“Group 4 will always be strong as long as it has a strong leader at the top.”
Group 4 will elect a new president at its annual general meeting at Gunnedah later this month.
Fish is a life member of Narrabri, Group 4, the old Northern Division and the CRL.
